  • GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®

The Gyrotonic Expansion System, a movement system created by Juliu Horvath, has two main branches: Gyrotonic®, performed on specially designed equipment, and Gyrokinesis®, performed on stools and floor mats. Horvath, a former dancer, developed the system during his personal struggle with chronic pain and injuries.

The Gyrotonic Expansion System embraces key principles also found in yoga, dance, tai chi and gymnastics to simultaneously stretch, mobilize and strengthen the entire body, especially the spine, pelvis and core muscles. The Gyrotonic Pulley Tower uses a system of weights, pulleys and a rotating "handle unit" to support and challenge the client as he executes exercises that simulate all natural movements of the spine. In Gyrokinesis classes, clients perform rhythmic and fluid movements sitting, lying down and standing to systematically stretch and strengthen the body. In all Gyrotonic Expansion System work, special breath patterns combine with movement to stimulate the internal organs and energy system.

Certified Gyrotonic instructors have undertaken a period of personal study and completed seminars and supervised hours with a master trainer, apprentice teaching, and a final certification weekend of study with Horvath. The certification process for Gyrokinesis is separate but similarly structured. Typically, it takes one to two years of study to complete the requirements for both branches of the system. Maintaining certification requires bi-annual update courses with a master trainer. CORE requires annual continuing education for all of its instructors.
